Artists' Spotlight...

In putting together this site, Jo and I were overwhelmed by the talent and energy of many of the artists found on the Web.  In tribute to their talent, Creative Speculations will be spotlighting one or two artists a month.  We invite you to visit their sites and judge the work for yourself.

Artist Pick for August, 1999

Join the Mysterious Travelers on a mystical journey through time and space with  French SF&F illustrator, painter and sculptor, Coriat.

 Artist Pick for June/July, 1999

Stephanie Pui-Mun Law is a real talent.  I do not have the words to describe her site, so I shall use her quote:

"...The shadows are the truths in here,
So enter at your risk
for the tragedy of knowing
Is to know what you have missed...
"

      Artist Pick for May, 1999

Swamp Thing?  Frankenstein?  How about The Faculty?   How about the creator of some of the most horrific art and fantastic monsters over the past three decades?  Check out the official website of Bernie Wrightson.  And don't forget to look at the detailed sketches of The Faculty, a recently release film

Artist Pick for April, 1999

Arkon Zark!  Not since the premier of The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show has a comic book/cartoon shown such élan.   Humorous and witty, watch for the running jokes.   Charley Parker's pages download quickly, but be sure to stick around--you might miss something.  DC and Marvel take note!

            Artist Pick for March, 1999

Dawid Michalczyk is a twenty-six year-old freelance illustrator.  He describes his gallery, Visions, as a "small place on the net dedicated to my works."  It may be small, but it is packed with wonderful SF illustrations.  Enjoy his site, and sign up for the free newsletter, I did.  I want to know when more of his works are posted.

    Artist Pick for Feburary, 1999

Not only a showplace for his fine art, Digital Dominance Galleries is a place of experimentation, knowledge and history.  Use the whiteboard to create, learn how to teach art history, find out "Why the Mona Lisa is Smiling" from high school students, be an art detective and enjoy "1200 years of Italian Sculpture."

    Artist Pick for January, 1999

What better way to start the New Year than with the art of one the travellers we have met along the virtual highway that is the Web.  The day we received this card, it was pretty blue around here due to holiday pressures.  So from bah-humbug, we bring you the Holiday Card from gak.

Artists Picks for December, 1998

Both Sites this month, Lothlorien and Farp are the vision of Thomas F. Abrahamsson.

Thomas F. Abrahamsson - Not only a talented artist, this generous 27 year-old found the Elfwood  site in 1996 to publish amateur art on the Web. His virtual gallery, Lothlorien, features the high fantasy art of 71 artists. What a treat!

Thomas F. Abrahamsson - Under a copy of the painting, "The blind leading the blind" (by Peter Breugel (the Elder), 1568), Thomas F. Abrahamsson asks: "The blind leading the blind? Can amateurs teach amateurs? Well, why not?"

FARP, the fantasy art resource project, is a free guide to Fantasy and Science Fiction art, creation, history, techniques, and much more… The articles are written the artists of Elfwood. Take a look!

Artists Picks for November, 1998

Malcom Mcclinton is a very talented artist who spends 80% of his free time drawing and painting. His goal: To make a living with his art. Malcolm is a member of the Amateur Fantasy Art Gallery. Visit him there. His site is a visual treat, and loads quickly. And don’t forget, sign his guestbook, or email him at mmclin7789@aol.com.

Across the big pond, we find the very talented Martin Raskovsky on his farm in North Somerset, UK. Born on November 28, 1949 in Argentina, he graduated with honors from University of Essex and completed his Ph.D. in computer science in 1982. His love of the sea is what drew us to his art. Visit his site, and email your appreciation to martin@atelier.demon.co.uk.

Artists Picks for October, 1998

We are proud to display an original art piece by Fred Wellner for the October issue of MSF&F. Please visit his virtual studio, Altered States, for an eye pleasing treat.

Inspiration Studios in Edinburgh, Scotland is our other choice for this month. We thought about posting one of his exceptional graphics, but we decided that if you want to see his Tower on the Lake or Forbidden Zone, you need to visit the UK.

Artists Picks for September, 1998

Most of the borders that frame the saga pages were shamelessly lifted from a graphic artist named Silverhair.  She invites the public to make use of her borders, which number in the hundreds.  Just in case you have missed her logo at the bottom of the sagas, please visit her site and let her know how much you appreciate her talent.

Our second choice this month is an artist named Duncan Long.   I found him during a search for quality zines on the Web.  He had illustrated a story, Search & Rescue by Bruce Davis, for Planet Magazine.   Then Jo sent me a virtual postcard from his site with a note to check this artist.  We invite you to visit Duncan Long at the following Web Sites:

Virtual Postcards

Duncan has just added a virtual gallery, Distortions, to his site.  Responding to calls from viewers for more beauty in his art, he has tried to comply.  The new pages are not truly abstract, but the faces and objects have been distorted and modified into perplexing patterns and shapes reminiscent of M.C. Escher.
